How to Apply

The following guidelines should help you in submitting your application for admission to the PhD program in Second Language Studies.

Steps in the Application Process:

  1. Submit a graduate school application which can be filled out on the Graduate School website.
    International students must use the International Graduate Application. (More information for International students can be found at the Office of International Students and Scholars.

    Major Code (for all applicants) = 5642

  2. Submit the following along with the application:

    • GRE Scores (MSU institution code=1465)

    • For non-native speakers of English
      • TOEFL score of 600 (250 CBT or 100 iBT) or higher (MSU institution code=1465)
      • IELTS score of 7.5 or higher

    • Submit the following directly to the SLS Program (A-711, Wells Hall, MSU, East Lansing MI 48824
      • Statement of research interests
      • Academic Writing Sample
      • Transcripts from all institutions of higher education
      • 3 academic references

    * Preference will be given to those with an MA in a related field
    * All admissions decisions will be made by the Advisory Committee in consultation with other relevant faculty.

Applications are due by January 15, 2010.
To be considered for University-wide fellowships, application materials are due by January 6, 2010.
