Review of SpeechInAction (2005). Richard Cauldwell & Mike Beiby.

Maren Schierloh

This review evaluates the web program SpeechInAction, which is designed to help L2 English language students with listening and speaking skills.  By using SpeechInAction, learners can experience a variety of English dialects and situations, exposing the learner to the reality of language variation. However, the overt emphasis on native-like perception and production seems to be unrealistic and, in most contexts, inappropriate for adult L2 learners and/or L2 teaching.
