My name is Myeongeun Son, and I am a Ph.D. candidate in the Second Language Studies Program at Michigan State University. I have started my career as an assistant professor in the Department of International Studies at Nagoya University of Commerce and Business in Japan since April 2021. I completed my BA in English linguistics and MA in TESOL at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Korea. Before joining the SLS program, I taught English to K-12 students.

My research interests lie in processing and production of second language and L2 language development. In particular, in my dissertation, I have investigated how L2 learners develop their L2 knowledge and whether their developmental patterns are consistent regardless of modalities under supervision of Dr. Patti Spinner. I am planning to defend my dissertation this summer. In addition, I explored whether L2 learners’ L1 processing have facilitative effects on L2 production, and it has been published in Applied Psycholinguistics.

While at MSU, I was involved in different projects. I worked for the Less Commonly Taught Languages Partnership Project under Dr. Koen Van Gorp. I also worked as a field researcher for Dr. Peter De Costa’s project funded by Creating Inclusive Excellence Grants. I taught Second Language Learning and Pedagogical Grammar to undergraduate students and taught American Language and Culture to exchange students from China and Saudi Arabia. These research and teaching experiences at MSU have helped me become more professional as a researcher and teacher.
